The VAN RUTH® CEMENTING AND WEDGING TOP PACKER (CWTP) may be used by it's self to pressure grout through the packer, unstable ground formations, fault zones and used for permeability testing.

The CWTP are placed by pumping through the drill string and locks in the drill hole upon leaving the rods. Further compression of the packer will seal off the drill hole. During this process an inlet port on top of the packer is opened. With the packer locked in the drill hole and rods still engaged on the packer's top red rod seal, grouting can begin. Upon grout flow, the bottom slips retaining cup is ejected allowing cement to pass through the packer's non return valve and into the drill hole.

When used together with the CWBP and an open rod string, multiple zones can be tested and or cemented while pulling rods. An open rod string is run to the deepest test location and a CWTP is pumped down and used to perform a permeability test at this bottom location, grouting can also be performed if needed. The rod string is raised to below the second fault or testing zone and a CWBP is pumped down to act as a bridge in the drill hole. The rod string is further raised and another CWTP is pumped down to test the second zone and so on... As only one rod trip is required for multiple zone testing and cementing, no time is lost due to mutiple trips or waiting for cement to set. The time savings using this method are considerable. The CWBP and CWTP may be drilled out after cementing if required.

The same CWTP and CWBP combination can again be used to repair deteriorating uphole fault zones: A CWBP set a as a bridge to preserve the stable hole conditions below, and the CWTP above. After cementing is complete only the newly grouted and stablised uphole section of the hole need be redrilled.

Where up hole slippage is of concern while cement is curing, adding the HD PLUG will provide an opposing mechanical lock to the assembly. Please note that the CWTP and HD PLUG must be set separately.

A vented hoisting plug should be used for withdrawing the rodstring with the rods being withdrawn at moderate speeds only. Where a HD PLUG is not being used, suction above the CWTP may have a tendency to pull it up the hole. This effect is further increased if grease or soft sections in the hole seal against the rod string.
